Octopus Fishing (Fishing with Gargoulettes)

If Djerbian fishermen can rightfully claim exclusivity over this fishing method, they probably owe it to the potters of Guellala—at least according to an old legend.

This is an ancient, simple yet highly effective technique: the fisherman submerges conical-shaped jars and small pots made by the potters of Guellala into shallow waters. Octopuses rush to settle inside, believing they have found a safe and peaceful refuge. A few days later, the fisherman retrieves them using a pole fitted with a hook. This method is both profitable and causes no damage.
