Djerba Guellala Museum
From the highest point on the island of Djerba (Tassita Hill, 52 meters above sea level) rises the majestic structure of the Heritage Museum in Guellala, standing like a medieval citadel. It watches over the legendary Djerbian countryside to the east—rich with memories—and overlooks the vast inland sea of Bougrara, cooled by its western sea breeze. At its feet lie the white-domed houses of the historic village of Guellala, surrounded by ancient pottery kilns and separated from the sea by a millennia-old oasis.
The Heritage Museum in Guellala is a vast cultural complex primarily dedicated to showcasing the island’s fabulous heritage, known for its marvels, originality, and profound cultural and social values. As a multicultural space, it presents a multitude of specialties and activities: it focuses on traditional arts, artisanal techniques and creations, and ancestral customs—priceless and diverse treasures that have built Djerba’s reputation and the value of its micro-civilization since antiquity. The Heritage Museum in Guellala is one of the largest cultural spaces in the country.
With over 4,000 m² of functional covered areas, the museum features a series of specialized and independent pavilions, each exploring a distinct theme: festivals, traditions and customs, crafts, myths and legends, original architecture, traditional music, a painting gallery, an Arabic calligraphy gallery, an original “Beskri” gallery, and a mosaic gallery that reconstructs masterpieces from the prestigious Roman city of Mininx, located in the southern part of the island.
The exhibition is arranged across a coherent series of scenes—some animated, others presented through artistic representations. The display immerses visitors in a magical world that makes them forget the passage of time. A visit to the museum is truly a journey through both past and present.
