Yaâcoub Bchiri

A renowned Jewish lyricist and instrumentalist, he is, in a way, the Raoul Journo of Djerba (Journo being a Tunisian Jewish singer and a major figure in traditional popular music in Tunisia).

B’chiri sings in Arabic and performs at wedding celebrations hosted by Muslim families in Djerba. He takes great pride in his identity as a Djerbian singer and his Tunisian nationality, and he insists on presenting himself as such. He holds tightly to this identity, valuing it above all other affiliations.
