Traditional Circumcision Rite

Here is the English translation:

The ceremony is surrounded by great pomp and holds an importance equal to that of the wedding. It begins with breaking a jar filled with coins and sweets. This gesture is rich in symbolism:

  • It helps distract the child to avoid psychological shock and any kind of suffering.

  • It announces the upcoming act of circumcision, allowing the women waiting in the adjacent room to express their joy with celebratory you-yous (traditional ululations).

  • It drives away evil spirits and wards off the evil eye.

Breaking and cutting (slaughtering animals and letting the blood flow) are acts that carry very specific meanings in traditional imagery; they symbolize the possession of a powerful force that frightens away all malevolent forces lurking around the child and his family, protecting them from misfortune.
